The short answer
At 8 ft (96 in), the formula leaves room for a golfer about 56 in tall swinging a driver with a typical finish. Most adults will clip the ceiling with a driver but can swing wedges and short irons, especially with a flatter finish.
The numbers at 8 feet
| Club (length) | Rise above head at 45° | Tallest golfer that clears 96 in |
|---|---|---|
| Driver (45.5 in) | 32.2 in | About 4′8″ |
| 7-iron (37 in) | 26.2 in | About 5′2″ |
| Pitching wedge (35.5 in) | 25.1 in | About 5′3″ |
FOREference calculationTallest golfer = 96 in − club rise − 1.5 in mat − 6 in margin. Dropping the margin to 2 in adds 4 in of height — acceptable only if you've tested with slow swings.
What works
- A floor launch monitor (overhead units need more height to mount).
- A short-game and iron practice setup with a net or screen.
- A thinner mat, or recessing the hitting area into the floor if construction allows.
- Locating the hitting position under a higher section — a stairwell opening, an unfinished joist bay or a garage door opening.
Compare floor units in launch monitors for low ceilings.
